Overview of Meru County Muugeni kairi antu Ameru. Ageni ibobui? Greeting to you all Ameru, and how are our visitors? Remember we have  had earlier posts about meru as a place and how it came to be. So, what's in an origin? Not just knowing who we are,  where we are from and how we came to be. Personally, I now know more. One might be thinking, is this really important? Yes, it is, and not as a by the way. It is both pure and inspiring- one develops a sense belonging thus you are able to identify yourself with certain places, people and culture. Meru County- Our Main Towns

  Meru Town I remember when growing up this town was known as Mutindwa oo Kangangi, meaning belonging to Kangangi, who was the first District’s Commissioner.  Butler Horne a short man with small stature who wandered surveying the district and that how he and Meru happened to share a name. Meru sits about five miles north of the equator at an altitude of roughly 5,000 feet in an area characterized by rural villages and farms, small towns and mixed forests. It is the sixth largest urban centre in Kenya. The town not only booms with businesses but also a growing education sector, up-to-the-minute real estate developments, agri-business, insurance, banking, beauty and fashion. Not only has these made it undoubtedly one of the fastest emerging towns in Kenya but the county’s headquarters. Female Genital Mutilation in Meru County- The Misery Cut It is locally called   ntano cia nkenye, which I rather call the misery cut. The practice is one of the oldest traditional practice among the Ameru as a ritual passage from childhood to adult among the girls/women. Basically, it involves total or partial removal of the girls’ genitalia-clitoris, how absurd that girls as young as five undergo the cutting! Even as other Kenyan tribes narrow down from the practice,we have relentlessly continued to cut our girls, making us a subject of interest locally and across borders. But how do we hold on to a practice that has no history (we don’t know when or where it came from) does it even have a single benefits? I am certain none.
